Here's the first chapter for your reading enjoyment:
To say that all Hell broke loose and to actually see it happen are two different things. You'll have to trust me on this.
I'll be the first to say that I was a bit surprised when an opening to Hell appeared at my feet and no one seemed the least bit concerned. I mean, the term “all Hell broke loose” sounds quite drastic, and you'd think there'd be quite a bit of action involved. But, no. In fact, I think I saw some of the guests at my going away party actually yawn. Mrs. White just looked annoyed, and Vince rolled his eyes before strolling to the other side of the room to grab a couple more crackers off the buffet.
I, for one — and maybe the only one — was stunned. After the opening had appeared, four men dressed in black suits with black shirts and red ties that matched the color of their dark-red skin ascended the staircase that had magically appeared, and took guard over the four corners of the opening. I immediately recognized a couple of the men. One had been to my cottage and the other had visited me at lunch to warn me about this very night.
I should have been frightened, but they looked like mafia hit men with really, really bad sunburns. I would have laughed at the absurdity of it all, probably because I was starting to have a mental breakdown from the stress of the past few months, but the last man that appeared completely derailed my thoughts.
He stood at least six-foot-five and wore relaxed dark blue jeans that hung low on his hips. A tight black t-shirt was stretched across his chest and I would have guessed his weight to be bordering on 300 pounds, and not an inch of that weight was body fat.
Like the others from his group, his skin was a dark shade of red, but unlike the others, he had a special feature that immediately captured my attention — horns. The man had honest to God horns! And they were sexy as Hell. I immediately began to fantasize about running my hands over his long, red horns. He reminded me a lot of Hellboy — he was big, red, and I supposed that's what Hellboy's horns would have looked like if he hadn't broken them off.
I couldn't help but stare, and when he spoke my name, I damn near fainted.
His voice was the deepest I'd ever heard, but it also felt like silk tickling my ear. He drew close and took my hand in his, bowing and bringing my fingers to his lips. His kiss was gentle and warm. Looking up into my eyes, while still bowing, he gave me a devilish smirk before standing upright and giving a small smile to Mrs. White.
“Jupiter Raven Hayes. Wow. I never thought I'd see the day.” He just stood there staring at me, and I'll admit it made me a bit uncomfortable. He was close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from his body – a body that had recently stepped from the flames of Hell.
“Hayden.” Mrs. White snapped at the man before me. “I've told you that you and your kind are not welcome here. Miss Hayes has already gone through orientation and will be leaving soon. In fact,”--she waved her hand around the room--“this was her going away party until you and your band of misfits showed up to ruin it.” She seemed truly exasperated as she stared at the man, refusing to back down from him.
“Now, now, Lily. Do we really need to go through this?” The man crossed his arms over his chest and shifted both of his shoulders to make himself more comfortable. “I mean, really. We both know the truth here, and it's time Jupiter did, too.”
I hate when people talk about me as if I'm not there.
“Uh, excuse me, but I'm standing right here.”
Mrs. White chose to ignore me and continued to quarrel with the man. “No means no, Hayden. Jupiter had witch and werewolf blood, but she's also been given the chance to choose from other societies that may better suit her personality.”
“So that's it then? You haven't told her what she really is?” Hayden turned to look at me. “I'm sorry, Jupiter. It's rude for us to continue this conversation as though you're not here.” He gave Mrs. White a look that said he was disgusted with her behavior. “The truth is no one here is being honest with you, and I feel you need to know the truth.”
“And what truth is that?” I asked, crossing my own arms in front of me.
“Hayden, don't you dare!” Mrs. White was getting more and more agitated, and I could have sworn I saw a few sparks fly from her fingertips.
He gave one last smirk to Mrs. White before he turned and gave me his full attention and a gorgeous smile. “Well, to start with, you're a demon Princess.”
That was it. I really did faint after that bombshell was dropped.
